Andrew Orloski: monuments to the ephemeral

04.12.24

In a world where everything is now made to be thrown away, there are those who decide to make eternal what usually fades away. Andrew Orloski, a well-trained American artist, challenges the boundaries between the everyday and the monumental through works that celebrate what usually goes unnoticed.

Using traditional and contemporary techniques, Orloski transforms industrial materials such as metal, glass, concrete and plaster, giving them a monumental solemnity. His work subverts the logic of consumption, making permanent objects that we normally consider ‘disposable’ and creating a bridge between their material history and our everyday existence. Thus, his creative process gives life to narratively dense and physically imposing works, in which weight and balance play a central role.

Orloski does not just mould his materials, he transforms them, extracting from banal objects a monumentality that defies time. His subjects - boxes, rolls of paper, fragments of everyday objects - are not spectacular, but therein lies the power of his work: in the celebration of the ordinary as a symbol of resistance and memory.

His works force us to reconsider the value of what we discard without a second thought. In an age of unbridled consumption, they become monuments dedicated to what we leave behind, a visual dialogue between the ephemeral and the permanent. And in giving weight and stability to these forgotten objects, Orloski raises an uncomfortable and essential question: what remains of us in a world that produces more and more waste?

It is not just a play on materials, but a reflection on the meaning of durability and value. Beneath the surface of each of his works, Orloski seems to suggest that even the most ordinary things can hold stories, unique and unexpected. The object that the viewer finds in front of him - solid, immobile, almost eternal - becomes a small rebellion against the logic of disposability, a call to slow down and look deeper.
